The Lowman Award is named for Wallace "Lucky "Lowman. He received his nickname by being one of only a few individuals who served our country as a prop plane fighter in three wars, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Lucky became a teaching golf pro after a career in the Air Force where he flew 52 missions over Germany in WWII. He also spent a tour in Viet Nam, flying 185 missions.
Throughout his life Lucky has applied the skills and life lessons learned in the service to golf, those being - honor, integrity, and respect. His dedication to those principals was well recognized by his fellow pilots and is mentioned in several history books covering these wars (i.e. My Secret War, by Richard Drury).
Lucky is a teaching professional and has been a member of the NCGA for many years. His teaching is as much about the game of golf should be played and honored as it is about the mechanical aspects. Anyone that asks Lucky for help, be it rules, mechanics, ethics, etc. never get turned away. Furthermore, Lucky also spent his entire time in the Mother Lode area working with Junior Golfers, helping children to learn the game of golf and one of its most important lessons, honesty.
The La Contenta Men’s Club has long recognized this remarkable talent and in fact recently honored Lucky by creating the “Lowman Award”. This reward is presented annually to the individual who represents the traits most revered by Lucky, honor, integrity, and honesty.
I'm sure that you have seen him at some of the tournaments. Take a look at trophy case with the Lowman Award in the lobby of La Contenta when you get a chance - it has an inscription that shows how much he has meant to the club. The hands on the grip of the trophy are modeled after Lucky. This trophy was commissioned to recognize our Player of the Year. We feel it is only fitting that it be dedicated in his name and called "The Lowman".
He is going stronger than ever, but he still walked the course carrying his golf bag until a few years ago and he is still a member of the Men's Club. He has helped a lot of golfers with lessons over the years.
He is a legend at La Contenta.
